Amnesty International warned in its report on the human rights situation for the years 2023-2024 of the accelerating pace of the collapse of “the rule of law” due to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technologies, developed by giant technology companies, which enhances the risks of human rights violations.
Amnesty International added that the use of unfamiliar advanced technology in an unregulated manner has become one of the factors of international impunity that facilitates the evasion of law and punishment in conflicts and wars, with the widespread use of these technologies by military and political parties as weapons.
It pointed out that major technology company platforms contribute to fueling conflicts, using electronic surveillance programs and mass monitoring tools to violate rights and freedoms, while some governments use “automated tools” targeting vulnerable and marginalized groups in society.
The organization explained in its report on the human rights situation “POL10/7200/2024” issued in April 2024 how modern technological tools, including facial recognition, are used to monitor demonstrations in many countries, discriminate against marginalized groups, especially migrants and refugees, as well as to track journalists and human rights activists through spying programs.
